Getting dressed can feel overwhelming when you stare at your wardrobe wondering what goes with what, but it doesn't need to be this way. By trusting simple formulas, you can create outfits quickly and confidently. These formulas help you know exactly what to add or take away to build a balanced look. It's what I like to call, fashion maths. This approach reduces decision fatigue and lets you enjoy your style without the stress and guesswork.

Why Outfit Formulas Work
Outfit formulas simplify the process of dressing by breaking it down into manageable parts. Instead of thinking about every item individually, you think in groups or combinations that work well together. This reduces overwhelm because you don’t have to reinvent the wheel each time you get dressed. Eventually you will know what goes with what to create the look you want.
For example, a classic formula might be:
Top + Bottom + Shoes
This sounds basic, but knowing which tops and bottoms pair well, and which shoes complete the look, is the key. The trick to this formula is balance. let's take the popular barrel leg jeans. the main feature of this item is the shape and curve. It creates a bigger look on the bottom. Therefore, the top needs to be simple and steam lined in shape, as do the shoes. It's a no to your chunky boots/trainers here (and always a yes from me to a pointed toe if you were wondering).
This works the other way around too. An oversized shirt needs a more fitted bottom.
Once you master a few formulas, you can mix and match confidently.
Common Outfit Formulas to Try
Here are some easy formulas that cover different occasions and styles:
Casual Day Out
Basic Tee + crew neck jumper or cardigan + Jeans + Trainers or pumps + colourful accessories.
This combo is comfortable and stylish. The accessories add personality, denim keeps it classic, and flat shoes finish with ease.
Smart Casual
satin midi skirt + white T-shirt + Sweatshirt + Flats or kitten heels
This formula works for casual meetings or dinners. The button-down shirt elevates the look, chinos keep it relaxed but neat, and loafers add polish.
Layered Look
Basic Tee + Cardigan with top buttons fastened + Jeans + Ankle Boots
Layering adds depth and interest. The cardigan softens the tee, skinny jeans balance proportions, and ankle boots add style.
Work-Ready
Wide leg trousers + Fitted top + Cropped jacket + Heels
This formula is timeless for office settings. It brings a twist to the suit vibe and an edge of confidence.
How to Know What to Add or Take Away
The key to fashion maths is understanding balance and proportion. Here are some tips:
Add a statement piece when your outfit feels too plain. For example, a bold item of jewellery or a statement bag can elevate a simple tee and jeans.
Take away an item if the outfit feels too busy. If you have a patterned top and patterned bottom, remove one pattern to avoid clashing if you don't feel ready for this. Sometimes it can work really well, but let's call this advanced maths.
Balance volume by pairing loose items with fitted ones. For example, the barrel jeans with the fitted top.
Match colours thoughtfully by sticking to a palette of 2-3 colours. This keeps the outfit looking connected.
Practical Example: Building an Outfit Step-by-Step
I need an outfit for the office this week. For context, I can wear whatever I want for an office day but I want to go for a smart casual look.
Start with a base: My palazzo jeans.
Add a top: basic tee.
Choose shoes: This is a very basic outfit without much personality so far so add leopard print pointed flats.
Do I want layers: Yes, so add a cream knitted waistcoat.
Accessorise: I love an accessory. Grey, blue and creamy white call for silver. So silver jewellery and then add personality and colour again - one cream bangle, one blue bangle, and one blue beaded necklace (so yes I'm wearing two necklaces now).

This formula is easy to remember and works well. If you want to switch it up, swap the denim jacket for a cardigan or the sneakers for loafers.
Tips to Simplify Getting Dressed Using Formulas
Create outfits based on your favourite formulas that you can use on rotation while you get confident.
Plan your outfit the night before if you will not have much time in the morning. This will mean the maths is done and you won't have the overwhelm in the morning.
Invest in good quality basics like solid tees, knitwear, and classic shoes. These form the foundation of many formulas.
Use accessories to change the vibe of an outfit without adding complexity.
